Hyundai Veloster Review
NAIAS in Detroit just introduced the new Hyundai Veloster. After many spy photos and much anticipation, comes a new compact coupe designed to make things complicated rivals like the Honda CR-Z or even the Volkswagen Scirocco. The Hyundai Veloster measures 4.22 meters long and 1.78 meters wide. For dimensions is somewhat larger than Honda CR-Z (4.08 meters) but still more compact than the Volkswagen Scirocco (4.26 meters).
What none of them have are three entrances to the cabin, and I'm excluding the tailgate. On the driver's side door is a good size, but the passenger side two doors, with a back door with the handle hidden in the pillar C. Allows easy access to the rear seats. According to Hyundai, the decision to place the door on the right side is purely practical: when we pick someone, parked on the right side of the road.
Hyundai Veloster design is quite bold. Maybe not as much as Nissan Juke type experiments, but I'm sure that will make heads turn. Starting at one front vaguely remembers Genesis Coupe, but with a strong personality: there is more to see the giant optical or odd shaped air intake located on the bumper. Hyundai says the Veloster is inspired by the shape of a motorcycle helmet when spice.
This inspiration is visible in the form having the glass surface of the carrier, and the manner in which the C-pillar meets the roof. The model shown in the pictures has optional 18-inch wheels, with centers painted in car color. Standard on all Veloster equipped 17-inch wheels, sufficient in our humble opinion. The rear ends with a drop type Kammback, aerodynamics and clearly similar to the aforementioned rivals.
The rear window seems very small, but the raucous put you behind the two central tailpipes in the center of the diffuser. As for the interior, the manufacturer claims that it is more spacious than rivals like the Scion tC, Mini Cooper or Honda CR-Z, which is not particularly difficult - is a bigger car than the last two - but always is appreciated. It looks modern and different, in line with Hyundai's latest creations.
Two of the most important innovations are under the hood.
New 1.6-liter GDI Gamma and gearbox dual clutch
The Veloster has been designated by the Hyundai to introduce the new Gamma engine family, a 1.6 direct injection technology loaded. It is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder, direct injection also features dual overhead cams and variable valve timing, both exhaust and intake. The distribution is done by chain and low-friction internal coating of the block should ensure excellent reliability with reduced fuel consumption.
Its maximum power is 138 hp at 6,300 rpm and 167 Nm of torque at 4,850 rpm. This engine gets a consumption of 5.9 l/100 km in the U.S. Highway cycle, similar to reality and far more realistic than the European. Meets all U.S. emissions standards and is backed by Hyundai with a guarantee of 10 years or 100,000 miles (about 170,000 km). This engine is mated to the big news in transmissions for Hyundai recently.
The Veloster debuts a gearbox double clutch (DCT) with six relationships. It has the typical operation of a double-clutch gearbox, although not mentioned if the set is bathed in oil or dry operation, as the DSG seven Volkswagen relationships. The advantages of a DCT box focus on rapid change and lower fuel consumption over a fully automatic torque converter or even a manual transmission.
It has a mode called Active Eco reducing consumption by up to 7% in real traffic conditions, using different electronic management shifts gears imagine rpm unless, among other details. Hyundai says it is a fun car to drive, thanking a very direct electric power steering and suspension system: McPherson independent front and rear torsion beam with an improved architecture.
It weighs only 1172 kg, so it should have some good benefits.
More connectivity to your iPhone
The main innovation is that it allows access to the Internet radio service Pandora. The connection is made through our smartphone Android, Blackberry or iPhone, where we have hired a good rate data. The interface is integrated into the car's infotainment system, users are currently over 65 million people in the U.S.
The Hyundai Veloster is a car aimed at a mainly young audience, so that connectivity to connect a Bluetooth mobile guaranteed. We can also "click" connect a USB or MPS using a 3.5 mm jack. When the car is stationary, we can also connect a game console in their standard size plug (115 volts in the U.S., 230 V in Europe). The audio system can store the equivalent of 10 CDs in its internal memory.
It has satellite radio and the onboard computer will have an Eco Coach, we will improve our consumption challenging. Honda has a nearly identical system in the CR-Z. A touch screen navigation is optional, and is associated with a useful reversing camera. Finally, the Veloster is also the flagship of the new Blue Link technology.
First, it helps drivers search assisted GPS through a system of voice recognition, based on the premise that every time we use our smartphones and more GPS navigators. We also send monthly reports of our vehicle. the most important is the Blue Link Assurance, similar to General Motors' OnStar. Among its functions, automatic call to the emergency services in the event of an accident with our coordinates.
Using a toll free number or an application on our phone we explore the multiple options including Blue Link: remote door lock, remote engine starting, alarm notification activated, hands-free writing SMS messages, alerts, maintenance or recall work, vehicle used to notice little tempestivas hours or driving speeds (for concerned parents), anti-theft systems.
